At the Y we know want to strengthen hearts and minds through the power of belonging. In 2018, we are growing our Intergenerational Programming and we're seeing the benefits of older adults and children becoming mentally and physically active together.

What We're Doing
Millidgeville Community Centre and Shannex Partnerships

Our Child Care centre visits the Shannex residents weekly from March to December. Residents plan activities such as crafts, tea parties, scavenger hunts, story time and more. Overall this has been a great program for both the children and the Shannex residents. It has helped our children build relationships with people they would not normally have an opportunity to have a relationship with. It is interesting to see how the children are aware they need to be calm and gentle when they arrive at the Shannex. They go from being busy 4 year olds to quiet and attentive with the residents. This experience is helping to build the children’s social skills, sense of community and social responsibility.

Saint John Regional Y Intergenerational Program

The YMCA Youth Leaders and older adults in the community have recently began an 8 week Intergenerational Program. This pilot project includes field trips, music, crafts, stories, art and more. To learn more about this program click HERE.
