This role works alongside the Resettlement Counsellors who are responsible for the Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP). Your role will be to help create a warm and supportive transitional phase for new arrivals during their first weeks in Canada. As an Arrival Support Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to meet and assist a newly arrived Government Assisted Refugee (GAR). This position is co-ordinated by Emma Blois, Volunteer Liaison, e.blois@saintjohny.ca.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Attend an orientation session for volunteers and any relevant ongoing training provided.
  • Upon notice of an arrival, you will be contacted and informed of the corresponding date. This is your opportunity to inform us if that time frame works for you to offer your assistance.
  • Communication from this point on will be transmitted through the RAP Team to arrange areas where assistance is needed.
  • Duties may include but are not limited to:
    • Arrivals at the airport
    • Weekend visits to The Stepping Home (temporary accommodation)
    • Accompanying family to appointments
    • Go grocery shopping 
  • The Resettlement Team will introduce you to the new GAR family/individual.
  • Make visits while the family is in the hotel for the first few days before we move them into their housing. Assistance with the move is always appreciated but not mandatory.
  • Although it is not expected or required, you are welcome to share meals or treats with the newcomers.  Please be sensitive to religious preferences and allergies.
  • Record number of volunteer hours and submit to the Volunteer Liaison, e.blois@saintjohny.ca on the first Monday of each new month.
