POSITION OVERVIEW

The Youth Leader will work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers to develop and deliver programming designed to cater to the physical, mental and social health of local youth. The Youth Leader will engage and supervise those participating in YMCA Youth and Sports Programming. You will ensure an enjoyable, safe and inclusive environment for youth and family participants of various skills and abilities. In order to meet our members’ needs, the position with require flexibility to work day, evening and weekend shifts.

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Effectively plan, organize and lead scheduled sports programs and activities.
  •  Employ inclusive and adaptive programming principles to cater to all participating members and resource additional support as deemed necessary.
  • Set-up and supervise Drop-in and Scheduled Sports Programs.
  • Scheduling and administrative duties including sign in/ sign out.
  • Maintain a safe and organized area both during and outside of core programming hours.
  • Maintain program and facility equipment, during activity set up and tear down; in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Communicate and enforce facility guidelines to ensure a safe and controlled environment while paying keen attention to accident/incident prevention.
  • Understanding of Child Protection Policies and Practices.
  • Act as a coach, teammate and mentor to participating youth & Families.
  • Assume additional duties including workshops, training, conferences and staff meetings as required.
  • Encourage and engage youth to participate in discussions, planning and facilitation of Youth Programs, as well as; developing youth volunteer opportunities both within the programs and the community.
  •  Act as a positive role model, effectively guiding youth behaviour and actions.

  • Understands and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism and imparts this knowledge and beliefs upon staff, volunteers and members.
  • Self manages personal professional development.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and quarterly departmental meetings.

 

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School or Post-Secondary Education.
  • Experience working with children; in Childcare, Afterschool and Youth Programs an asset.
  • Possess a strong work ethic and excellent organization skills.
  • An excellent team player able to share cooperative leadership with other staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search along with clearance from Department of Social Development.

WORKING CONDITION

  • As a Youth Leader you are a part-time YMCA of Greater Saint John staff person. Your hours of work and location may be adjusted due to programming needs. There is no guarantee of number of hours worked within a work week.
  • The Youth Team will provide coverage at all times the Centre is open.  This will require you to work a rotating schedule which including opening, closing and weekends.
  • As a YMCA of Greater Saint John staff person you are responsible for your own travel to and from work.
  • The YMCA of Greater Saint John has a Joint Health and Safety Committee which meets on a monthly basis to discuss health and safety within the workplace. Questions or concerns about your workplace must be brought forward to committee members.
  • As a Youth Leader you will be required to work in an environment which is often busy with high levels of noise.
  • You will be required to supervise multiple activities at once while handling and working directly with the children within your room. At times you will be required to work directly with children with communicable diseases.
  • You are responsible for the children’s’ safety on a daily basis. You will be required to perform first aid and CPR when and if necessary.
  • As a Youth Leader you will be responsible for the planning and structuring of activities for the children within your group. Collaboration with your team is highly encouraged.
  • This position will require the staff person to stand for periods of times, sit and crouch while engaging with children on their level.
  • You will be responsible to follow and abide by YMCA SAM 2.0 Standards. Ensuring a clean and well maintained centre is required by all staff persons.
