Y Lead program returns again this fall

Program develops leadership skills of Saint John youth

– October 4, 2021 SAINT JOHN, NB – The YMCA of Greater Saint John is relaunching an exciting program to develop leadership skills of Saint John youth and help them gain valuable life skills.

The 2021-22 Y Lead program returns again this fall after a very successful inaugural campaign in 2020-21. Through Y Lead, youth from Grades 8 to 12 become confident, pro-social Saint Johners, and leaders-in-training. Participants learn about decision-making, time management, community involvement and volunteerism, entrepreneurship, healthy living, and so much more.

“I signed up for Y Lead because I’m not very social and wanted to challenge myself and meet new people,” said Calder, a participant from last season’s Y Lead Program. “I love how welcoming it was and the people were very supportive, kind and you can be yourself with no judgement whatsoever. I would recommend Y Lead to my peers […]

YMCA supporting Afghanistan refugees

Supporting the arrival of Afghanistan refugees in Saint John

September 10, 2021 – SAINT JOHN, NB – The news from Afghanistan is devastating.  Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and settlement agencies across Canada are responding to this evolving and tragic situation and are supporting the arrival of Afghanistan refugees to Canada.

As a Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) provider, Newcomer Connections is preparing for Afghani and other refugee arrivals in Saint John in the coming months.

Newcomer Connections has long-standing experience and expertise responding to major resettlement initiatives, such as welcoming arrivals from Syria in 2015. The Saint John community responded to this crisis with amazing volunteer support and we are hoping to see our city step up again. While we are not currently seeing the same volume of arrivals as the Syrian response – we will see an increase in the frequency of arrivals.

The YMCA of Greater Saint John’s Newcomer Connections is […]

We must reflect this Canada Day and commit to change

Canada Day 2021 is a time for inward reflection and committing to change – July 1, 2021 SAINT JOHN, NB –

In recent months, we have witnessed the discovery of the remains of 215 children buried on the grounds of the Kamloops Residential School, the 104 remains uncovered at the former site of the Brandon Residential School, and the 751 remains found at the former site of the Marieval Indian Residential School at Cowessess, Saskatchewan, and with the knowledge that many more discoveries are to come.

We have a lot of work to do to live up to the promise of the Canada We Want. The Canada We Want is a place where oppressive and systemic barriers have been removed and replaced by opportunity, and where all have a deep sense of belonging. And we know a lot more work, by a lot more people and organizations, including ours, is needed to […]

YMCA of Greater Saint John Condemns Anti-Asian Racism

YMCA of Greater Saint John Condemns Anti-Asian Racism

– April 9, 2021 SAINT JOHN, NB – We are deeply concerned about the rise in anti-Asian racist violence that has occurred in Canada since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.  We are shocked and saddened by the violent events targeting Asian women in their place of work in Georgia last month, and we stand firmly against anti-Asian discrimination and attacks in our communities.

Since March 2020, there have been over 1,000 incidents of Anti-Asian hate crimes across Canada, according to data provided by Fight COVID Racism. The YMCA condemns this violence, and we stand with our Asian and Asian-Canadian staff, volunteers, and community members in support. We are committed to confronting, addressing, and dismantling racism in all forms.
