Y Employer Engagement Event Sparks Crucial Employment Discussions

SAINT JOHN, NB – YMCA Newcomer Connections is thrilled to have hosted its first online Employer Engagement Brunch and Forum (EEBF) on March 23. The event, created in a new virtual platform called REMO, provided a new and interactive experience to its attendees.

Members of the Y Newcomer Connections team met virtually with more than 60 community stakeholders, including representatives of the business community, parliament, local government, social development organizations, and more, to spark meaningful conversation on challenges faced by newcomers and businesses alike in hiring and retaining workers in the region.

Olive Ozoemena, Manager of Newcomer Programming, commenced the morning by recognizing the social and economic issues faced by newcomers and employers. Effective March 8, 2021, the Saint John Region (Zone 2) will have transitioned back to the Yellow Phase of the GNB COVID-19 Recovery Plan. Provided that our zone successfully transitions from Orange to Yellow, the YMCA of Greater Saint John will be implementing the following changes to keep you, our members, staff, and community safe and healthy.

Yellow Phase & Membership Protocols

Members are expected to self-screen for COVID-19 at home prior to entering any of our facilities. There will no longer be a screening desk. Please stay home if you are experiencing two or more COVID-19 symptoms.

YMCA demonstrates excellence in five key areas

MARCH 3, 2021 – The YMCA of Greater Saint John announced today that it has been re-accredited under Imagine Canada’s Standards Program. With this achievement, we are part of a distinguished ever-growing community of 250+ non-profit organizations dedicated to operational excellence.

The Standards Program is a Canada-wide set of shared standards for charities and non-profits designed to help organizations strengthen their operations in five fundamental areas: board governance; financial accountability and transparency; fundraising; staff management; and volunteer involvement.

We will be reopening our facilities on Thursday, January 28, 2021, following the Government of New Brunswick’s announcement that Zone 2 (Saint John) will be transitioning to the Orange Phase of the GNB COVID-19 Recovery Plan. This includes both the Saint John Regional Y and the Irving Oil Field House. Please remember that we will be reverting back to our Orange Phase Operational Protocols to keep our members, staff, and community safe from the spread of COVID-19.

COVID-19 Update | YMCA of Greater Saint John Temporarily Closes Fitness Facilities

The YMCA of Greater Saint John has temporarily closed our fitness facilities as of January 20, 2021, following the government announcement that Zone 2 (Saint John) is among the regions that has transitioned to the Red Phase of the GNB COVID-19 Recovery Plan. This includes the Saint John Regional Y and the Irving Oil Field House with the exception of their Child Care wings, which provide essential services.

Your Y Membership

  • All memberships and payments will be placed on hold and we will not be accepting or processing any cancellations or extending holds while we are closed.

COVID-19 Exposure at the Saint John Regional YMCA: January 4, 2021, 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM

Public Health has advised us that there was an exposure to a confirmed case of COVID-19 at the Saint John Regional Y on January 4, 2021, between 8:30 AM and 1:00 PM. Public Health is advising staff and patrons who scanned into the Regional Y through Membership on the specified time and date — regardless of their location within the building — to self-monitor for symptoms until midnight of January 19, 2021 (i.e. for 14 days). 

Thanks to our card scanning system and online program registrations, Public Health has been contacting all members, staff, and volunteers who were in direct contact by phone.

COVID-19 Update | Transitioning Back to Orange Phase: January 6, 2021

The Government of New Brunswick has announced that the entire province, including the Saint John region (Zone 2), will be moving into the Orange Phase of the Provincial Recovery Plan effective midnight, January 6, 2021. All of the YMCA of Greater Saint John’s facilities will remain open; however, there will be adjustments made to programs and operations to keep our members, staff, and community safe from the spread of COVID-19.

Membership

The Saint John Regional Y and Irving Oil Field House Fitness Centres remain open to our members but the following changes will be implemented.

  • Active Screening Table will return with mandatory temperature checks upon entering the facility and answering screening questions.
  • All locker rooms and team change rooms are temporarily closed. Members are asked to bring only their spill-proof water bottles and indoor footwear.

YMCA Launches Curbside Membership Program amid Saint John Region Orange Phase

The YMCA of Greater Saint John is thrilled to offer the Curbside Membership program to current and prospective members who want to stay healthy and active from the safety and comfort of their own homes. It allows participants to order exercise equipment and programs online for pick-up.

“We’re all feeling anxious going back into the Orange Phase,” says Shilo Boucher, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Saint John. “But we want our members and our entire community to know that the Y is always here for them.”

Current Y Members can access the program at no added cost by placing orders through the association’s website. Four unique program streams are currently available that are tailored for families of all sizes and all ages and stages of life.

COVID-19 Membership Update | December 10, 2020

As of December 11, the Saint John Region (Zone 2) has transitioned back to the yellow phase of the Provincial Recovery. The following changes will take effect as of Friday, December 11 to keep our members, staff, and community as safe and healthy as possible.

Membership

The Irving Oil Field House and Saint John Regional Y fitness facilities remain open to our members but the following changes have been implemented.

  • Please exercise self-screening upon entering any facility.
  • Members must have their access card to scan in for contact tracing.
  • All locker and team change rooms will reopen with showers open for use.
  • Physical distancing requirements will decrease to 3 metres/9 feet for high-intensity fitness classes and exercise.
  • Physical distancing of 2 meters/6 feet will be maintained for low-intensity fitness classes (e.g. yoga).
  • Masks must also be worn at all times, except while actively working out.
