Katie & Sadie Haines: Multi Generations of Camp
For more than 95 years, the YMCA’s Camp Glenburn has been a part of Katie Haines’ family in one way or another.
“My family has been involved with Glenburn since the start,” she said.
Katie’s first experience as a camper was in 1985 at the age of eight, but her family’s story actually started way back in 1928. This is when Katie’s great-grandmother served on the Board of Directors for the YMCA and Camp Glenburn when the camp first opened. At the time, her grandmother attended as a camper and as time went on, her aunts and uncles also attended camp, and some went on to work there.
“My uncle was (part of) the first group of boys allowed at Glenburn,” said Katie, as she explained the connections her family has had in key moments in Camp Glenburn’s history.
A few years after joining Camp Glenburn, Katie graduated to the Counsellor in Training (CIT) program in 1992 and continued on as a Junior Counselor in 1993.
When asked about her most memorable moments from Camp, Katie excitedly replied, “I LOVED Olympic Day, as it is now known as.”
She said it was at Glenburn where she developed her love of swimming and she went on to get her National Certification and came back to teach swimming at Glenburn in the following summers.
But more than the activities, it was the impact of the people that ultimately stood out for Katie.
“I honestly believe every single counselor impacted my life. I always loved the whole staff vibe and the inclusion of ‘everyone counted and mattered’ at Glenburn.”
Almost 20 years later, some of Katie’s closest friends are those friendships that first began at Camp Glenburn.
The impact of Camp Glenburn did not stop with Katie, as Katie’s daughter Sadie is now heading into her seventh summer of camp. Sadie grew up visiting Camp Glenburn, seeing old pictures, and hearing stories from her mom, so it was no surprise to Katie that her daughter would want to attend.
“She is die-hard Glenburn. Much more than me,” she said.
Similar to her mom, Sadie says that the counselors have always been a huge influence on the experience at camp.
Sadie said she loves everything about the camp experience, but especially enjoys the water, out-trips, and even completed the Leadership Canoe program last year. She can’t wait for Camp to begin this summer.
When asked about what she is looking forward to most this summer, Sadie sums it up with, “3 weeks of Glenburn!”
