How long have you been in Saint John: 8.5 months

Favourite thing about living in Saint John:
1: City. Not only the beauty and welcoming atmosphere, but moreover Saint John is a significant part of Canadian history. It’s a great honour for me and my family to live in one of the oldest cities of the country. Saint John is so different – modern and old fashioned at the same time. I’m here for almost nine months and don’t explore even a hundredth of this amazing place. I read a little bit about history, sights and parks, but still I am waiting for free time to discover as much as possible.

2: Nature. One of my friends said that Saint John area looks like when someone cleaned a part of a forest and built a beautiful city on the ocean coast, and I feel the same. I love the nature in Saint John area and inside the city: Rockwood Park, Irving Nature Park, Mispec Park etc.

3: Lifestyle. We came from a small city by the standards of Ukraine. Its population is comparable to Saint John’s, and some aspect of lifestyle are really similar. It’s not enough for me just to live somewhere. For me, the most valuable is a feeling that you have a chance to become a part of local community. Thanks to the YMCA of Greater Saint John, multicultural association of Saint John and our new friends, I can call this place home.

Why you wanted to be a part of the Newcomer Connections Client Advisory Committee:
As a newcomer myself, I fully realize all the importance of spreading knowledge. I want to help people who experience similar issues. I believe that the most valuable knowledge – the gained experience by ourselves. I appreciate help I received while settling in a new country and now I want to give back.

Helping clients and see them satisfied with the services that the YMCA offers, that will be great for me because I will feel that I’m doing something useful for the YMCA, and I will be happy because I help someone who needed help.

Saint John is a peace and quiet place. People are very nice. They will say hello to you in the street, even they do not know you. Traffic is not tight as the big city.

I think to be a part of the Newcomer Connections Client Advisory Committee is a good way to know more local culture, and I also want to do some things for the newcomers.
