Volunteer Position: Youth Program Volunteer

Program: Youth Programs

Location: Saint John Regional Y, 191 Churchill Blvd, Saint John, NB, E2K 3E2,

Qualifications and Skills: Current and clear security clearance with vulnerable sector screening, flexible, energetic, creative and patient (minimum age requirement 12 years and up)

Responsibilities

  • Assist Youth Program Leads with children during all activities inside or outside the centre
  • Assist Youth Program Leads with preparation as well as participating in field trips and community events while providing continued assistance to the educator
  • Assist Youth Program Leads with set up and tear down of programs
  • Ensure proper registration sign in/ sign out of each child in the centre, enforces one- hour thirty minute time limit
  • Be positive, helpful and welcoming at all times
  • Use respectful language at all times
  • Well-groomed and appropriately dressed in clothing that is fitting for the position and that will leave the best possible impression on the public
  • Treat staff, clients and other volunteers of the YMCA of Greater Saint John with respect and dignity and be responsible in the use of the YMCA of Greater Saint John resources
  • Preform Volunteer responsibilities promptly, reliably and to the best of the Volunteer’s ability
  • Adhere to policies and procedures of the YMCA of Greater Saint John
  • Display appropriate YMCA of Greater Saint John Volunteer identification as required

Time Commitment:  Flexible volunteer hours based on program schedule and volunteers availability

Volunteer Position: YThrive Volunteer

Program: YThrive

Location: Saint John Regional Y, 191 Churchill Blvd. Saint John, NB E2K 3E2

Description: To assist and build relationships with Members, YMCA Staff and Volunteers assisting Fitness Staff on duty. Provide exercise advice and instruction to members. Demonstrate knowledge of Fitness Floor, YMCA mission, core values and act as a positive role model. Help to maintain a positive, friendly, and safe environment in Health and Wellness areas.

Qualifications and Skills: Must be minimum of 14 years old. Have the understanding or willingness to learn the physical fitness principals. Standard CPR/AED is preferred. Must be fun, friendly, enthusiastic and hardworking and is genuinely interested in being a part of the YMCA. Current and clear security clearance with vulnerable sector screening and Department of Social Development required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality customer service to participants
  • Provide coaching appointments to members
  • Actively book people into YThrive appointments and recommend YMCA programs to suit customer goals and needs
  • Assist with cleaning duties of the Fitness Floor
  • Ensure Fitness Floor rules are being followed
  • Assist instructors with class transitions and set up
  • Maintain excellent communication with Fitness staff, volunteers and members
  • Complete all online training as assigned
  • Use respectable language at all times
  • Well-groomed and appropriately dressed in clothing that is fitting for the position and that will leave the best possible impression on the public.
  • Accept the guidance and decisions from the Supervisor/Director as well as reporting planned or unplanned absence to the Supervisor/Director
  • Treat staff, clients and other volunteers of the YMCA of Greater Saint John with respect and dignity and be responsible in the use of the YMCA of Greater Saint John’s resources
  • Perform Volunteer responsibilities promptly, reliably and to the best of the Volunteer’s ability

  • Accept and work within the YMCA of Greater Saint John’s Guiding Principles, the Mission Statement as well as the Values of the YMCA of Greater Saint John

Older Adults

Volunteer Position: Digital Literacy Program Volunteer

Program: Digital Literacy

Location: Saint John Regional Y, 191 Churchill Blvd. Saint John, NB E2K 3E2

Description: The Digital Literacy program is a program to help older adults access and use technology. We are looking for volunteers to do one-on-one sessions with older adults, training will be provided. These sessions are geared towards the participants and what they want to learn in regards to technology. This program will be available virtually as well as in-person making sure that social distancing measures are being maintained Qualifications and Skills: Completed Connected Canadians training. Current and clear security clearance with vulnerable sector screening and Department of Social Development required.

  • Well-groomed and appropriately dressed in clothing that is fitting for the position and that will leave the best possible impression on the public.

Newcomer Connections

Volunteer: First Friend

Location: Saint John, New Brunswick

Organization: YMCA of Greater Saint John

Department: Newcomer Connections

Commitment Requirement:  Minimum 6 month commitment. We recommend two hours of visit time per week.

Nature and Scope

The First Friend initiative is designed to create a natural, unique friendship with your newcomer match while assisting them in adjusting to life in Canada and encouraging them to become independent. This volunteer works alongside the Settlement Counsellor and is coordinated by the Volunteer Liaison, Katie Pierce, k.pierce@saintjohny.ca.

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Attend orientation and training session for volunteers.
  • Introduce the newcomer to the city of Saint John and some of the resources it has to offer through guided tours or visits throughout the city.
  • Offer support and guidance in learning to shop for groceries and other common needs.
  • Offer the newcomer an opportunity to regularly practice his or her English in an informal setting.
  • Take time to learn and understand the culture and values of the newcomer while simultaneously teaching an appreciation for Canadian traditions and values.
  • Introduce the newcomer to social and recreational activities.
  • Some activities include but are not limited to: share meals, go for walks or to the park, attend free events around the city, explore the history that Saint John has to offer.
  • There is no fiscal responsibility that comes with this role.
  • Encourage Newcomers to be independent whenever possible and allow them to learn and grow from the choices they make.

Volunteer: Homework Club Tutor

Location: Saint John, New Brunswick

Organization: YMCA of Greater Saint John

Department: Newcomer Connections

Commitment Requirement:  Thursday evenings, 6:00 P.M. – 7:30 P.M., September to June (school year).

Nature and Scope

Homework Club is an afterschool tutoring program offered to newcomer students in Middle and High school. Homework Club Tutors help newcomer children of all backgrounds especially those who have come to Canada as refugees. The Homework Club Tutor provides tutoring support so that students can reach their academic goals and can adapt and integrate faster into the New Brunswick education system. Homework Club Tutors primarily provide support in Middle and High School Math, English, Science and ESL (English as a Second Language). This position works alongside Newcomer Connections’ School Coordinators, Kimchi Nguyen and Shereen Khattab.

Responsibilities

  • Attend orientation and training.
  • Update the Homework Club online schedule as per availability.
  • Notify the School Coordinator scheduled or the Volunteer Liaison if unable to attend.
  • Assist and support educational activities for students ranging from ages 12-18 who attend the Homework Club as well as aid with any school material they bring.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the student when working together.
  • Communicate openly and regularly with the School Coordinators.
  • Keep the School Coordinators informed of any issues that may impact tutoring.
  • Listen to and respect the thoughts and viewpoints of the student, and focus on their strengths. • Report to the Volunteer Liaison, Katie Pierce, k.pierce@saintjohny.com regarding topics that relate to the volunteer experience.
  • Submit tutoring hours to the Volunteer Liaison.
