The YMCA of Greater Saint John, in collaboration with YMCA Canada, has launched YMCA at Home as a free virtual activity and wellness platform in response to country-wide facility closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This resource, which is available now, connects users of all ages and fitness levels to classes, children’s programming, and personal wellness resources in the comfort and safety of their homes.
“The YMCA has been offering innovative programs and activities that get young people active for more than 100 years, whether it’s through basketball, swimming lessons, volleyball, or summer camp,” said Shilo Boucher, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Saint John.
YGym, a program within the YMCA at Home platform, is instructed by Y-certified fitness coaches and features content based on YMCA Canada’s Health & Fitness programs and Canada’s Physical Activity Guidelines. The Y has made this resource available for schools to use free of charge with activities designed to complement physical education.
The YMCA of Greater Saint John and New Brunswick’s Anglophone School District South (ASD-S) have partnered to offer YGym as a resource for students, families, and staff to promote physical activity virtually while schools and the Y remain temporarily closed.
“We see YGym as an extension of this type of innovation: a virtual physical activity program in this time of physical distancing,” said Shilo Boucher.
This valuable resource will allow educators and students to participate in healthy activities as a part of their school’s e-learning platform. ASD-S teachers are currently offering students and families on-line learning opportunities throughout 70 schools. One of the daily recommendations is 30 minutes of physical activity.
Zoe Watson, ASD-S Superintendent, said, “I was happy to receive the information on YGym and it was quickly sent to all schools for their use. After reviewing the link, I felt it would also be applicable for our 3,000 teaching and non-teaching employees.”
“We are encouraging all of our employees to stay physically active at this time and the Y’s online videos are an excellent way to stay healthy.”
